Evaluating a Possible Shoulder Fracture
One of the first things that your doctor will do when evaluating a shoulder fracture is x-ray the injured area. Your doctor will examine your arm, shoulder, upper back and chest areas. He/she will also ask you a series of questions about your past medical history related to your shoulder and other areas. If a shoulder fracture is present, your doctor will discuss corrective options.
The majority of shoulder fractures do not require surgical treatment. Some fractures are treated by placing the arm in a sling for a period of weeks and working on exercises to strengthen the shoulder. With more serious fractures, the doctor may recommend having shoulder replacement surgery or surgical repair if other treatment options fail to provide pain relief.
If shoulder replacement surgery is the treatment option your doctor recommends, he/she will then select an implant that meets your needs. Your surgeon will choose an implant, that will restore proper movement, achieve adequate range of motion and alleviate pain and discomfort.
